By: James C. WilliamsKharkiv firefighters received a fire truck
On January 27, with the assistance of volunteers Ihor and Olena Gonchar, as well as the international organization "Rotary Club of Czestochowa Poland" and "Rotary Club of Pforzheim Germany,” was purchased and handed over to the Kharkiv garrison of the State Emergency Service the four-wheel drive fire and rescue vehicle "IVECO MAGIRUS.”
Serhiy, first deputy head of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region Chaban expressed gratitude to Kharkiv, Polish, and German volunteers for their effective support to rescuers by strengthening the material and technical base of Kharkiv’s operations.
The fire truck will be put into use in one of the districts of the city in the coming days, where it will rescue service.
The fire truck left Pforzheim, Germany, on 21 December 2022, and arrived in Czestochowa, Poland on 5 January 2023. It was then transferred to Lviv, Ukraine on 66 January, handed over to Ukrainian officials, received, custom clearance, and transferred to Kharkiv on 25 January, where it arrived two days later. It traveled a total distance appr. 2600 km through two national borders. Vitaliy Yurkevich, Hegelmann Transporte, took are of the logistics (drivers, maintenance, formalities).
Special thanks to Norbert Ratzlaff and Sebastian Fischer from RC Pforzheim.
Also, in January, Czestchowa RC acquired and Hegelmann Transporte delivered 30 1kWh power generators to Kharkiv, where the demand is huge because of the hard winter and Russian attacks on the electric power grid. Funds for these generators came from the Punta Gorda RC, the Strongsville Ohio RC, and the Czestochowa RC.
This February Czestochowa RC is working with Hegelmann Transporte to deliver thermal underwear and socks and 450 stasis (tourniquets) to Ukraine.
The total value of these shipments is $14,700.

Ukraine Relief Project
Sunday, November 20, 2022
By: James C. WilliamsPunta Gorda Rotary Club's UKRAINE RELIEF PROJECT continues to provide humanitarian and medical aid to Ukrainians. We have sent $55,000 in aid, triggered the donation of another $150,000 in assistance from other Rotary Clubs and Districts, and have just introduced the STAND WITH UKRAINE Tee-shirt in cooperation with the E-Club of Southeast USA and Caribbean. $10 of every sale goes to our relief project.
All donations to the Punta Gorda Rotary Foundation (Ukrainian Relief) are transferred directly to the Czestochowa Club's bank account, our Polish Rotary partner, and expended on humanitarian and medical supplies that are shipped directly to hospitals in Ukraine (first aid kits, dressings, surgical instruments, medications, etc.). Goods and food also support Ukrainian refugees.

Donations can be made by sending a check payable to the Punta Gorda Rotary Foundation with Ukraine Relief in the memo line, and mailing it to PG Rotary Foundation Ukraine Relief, PO Box 511132, Punta Gorda FL 33051-1132.
Wojtek Jankowski, Immediate Past President of the Czestochowa Rotary Club, reports regularly about the relief efforts. His club works with Hegelmann Logistics, a Ukrainian company located in Czestochowa, which delivers relief supplies to cities in Ukraine. They receive specific orders from Ukrainian medical institutions and collect the supplies most needed. This is the sort of help that is targeted and most effective.
In additional to collaborating with Punta Gorda Rotary, the Czestochowa club is "a kind of hub for other Rotarians from the USA, Germany, and other EU countries. They send us supplies which we forward directly to Ukraine. We also support refugees arriving in our town with goods and food,” says Jankowski.

Punta Gorda Rotary continues aid to Ukrainian refugees in their new Poland shelter
Hospital retrofitted to serve as temporary home for hundreds

PUNTA GORDA — Punta Gorda Rotary Club’s James Williams said up to 1,000 Ukrainian refugees have been sheltered in a former hospital in Poland.Local Rotary clubs, along with groups in Poland, have been assisting.
While some have moved on, there were about 200 refugees currently living there, Williams said.
He said new refugees are always moving in to the hospital that has now become a type of apartment building for those who have been uprooted.
After the invasion of Ukraine, the Punta Gorda Rotary teamed up with the Czestochowa Rotary Club in Poland which purchased essential items from funds donated by the Punta Gorda group.
The goods were then trucked into Ukraine.
In March, the Czestochowa Rotary acquired an abandoned hospital and retrofitted it to provide housing for families.
The Punta Gorda Rotary held fundraisers and asked the public for donations.
Monetary aid from the PG Rotary and other Rotarians who also donated through the Punta Gorda club, provided kitchen goods and appliances, clothing, and food for the refugees living in the Czestochowa former hospital.
Also purchased were medical, surgical and other humanitarian supplies that were trucked into war-torn Ukraine.
The PG Rotary Club recently bought cookware for the hospital’s kitchen, Williams said.
“Four or five refrigerators were purchased, and each family has one shelf in the refrigerator,” he said. There is also a stove in the main kitchen area, and “there are hot plates in each room,” Williams added.
The refugees are mostly women and children, Williams said. With the exception of older and disabled men, most men joined Ukraine’s military in the country’s fight against Russia.
Although food is donated, some of the women have taken jobs locally and are able to purchase their own food and other items, he said.
The hospital “is a safe place for them,” Williams said.
While some refugees stay only a short time and go on to live in Germany, France, or a Scandinavian country, others have remained in Poland to find work, he said.
Williams said the PG Rotary will continue to send funding to the Czestochowa Rotary Club for it to purchase food, clothing, and other essentials for the Ukrainian people.
He said the club met recently and plans to hold a fundraiser in September or October.
Those interested in assisting can send a donation by check payable to the Punta Gorda Rotary Foundation, and mail it to PG Rotary Foundation Ukrainian Relief, PO Box 511132, Punta Gorda, FL 33951-1132, or donate online at https://punta-gorda-rotary-club.square.site.
Cash donations are transferred directly to the Czestochowa Club’s bank account to be expended on medical supplies that will be shipped directly to hospitals in Ukraine (first aid kits, dressings, surgical instruments, medications, etc) and goods and food to support refugees entering Poland.
Results of the Rotary’s efforts will be posted on: puntagordarotary.org.

Czestochowa and Punta Gorda Rotary meeting online
Friday, May 20, 2022
By: James C. WilliamsToday we had our first online meeting via ZOOM to introduce members of both clubs to each other and to discuss future plans. We agreed that the needs are ongoing and will last well into the future. Czestochowa Rotary will continue to seek to fulfill needs specified by its contacts with medical facilities and Rotarians in Ukraine. The greatest need seems to be along the eastern front, where Russia is applying heavy artillery fire against Ukrainian forces as well as against Ukrainian cities, towns, and villages. Hospitals in Mykolayiv near Kherson and Zaporizhia, a city on the Dnieper River, are prime targets for our assistance. We will be meeting more frequently as time goes forward.

Punta Gorda Rotary hosts a Ukrainian Refugee
Thursday, March 24, 2022
By: James C. WilliamsPunta Gorda Rotary Club hosted Lyudmila Belokon, a Ukrainian who has an apartment in Kyiv. The organizer of the club's Ukraine Relief Project, James Williams, introduced Lyuda and her friends from Florida and spoke briefly about the project and announced that the club's foundation had authorized $3,000 for the project, with more being collected from individual donations.
Lyuda and her American husband were in Kyiv and visited its northern suburbs from December through the start of the Russian bombing in late February. Although they had air flights booked from Kyiv in late February, all flights were canceled, so they fled by motorcar, rail, and on foot. Their journey took three weeks from Kyiv to Lviv to Poland and, then to Amsterdam to fly to their home in Southwest Florida finally in March. She described their trip and talked about the horrors they saw on the way.
